I say AF, though the Navy is a close second. Personally, I can't stand the thought of being stuck on a ship for months on end and being unable to get away from all those people!
I have been in the AF for over 8 years... there are ups and downs with every service... some people have good experiences and enjoy their time in the service and others don't and come away with nothing but negative stuff to pass on to others.
We have really good facilities, excellent housing, great jobs where we can actually use our skills in the outside world (the Navy is similar too, just not the Army and Marines, in general).
I wouldn't say that either service is "safer" than the other. You will deploy in both so...
Anyway, I've worked with the Navy for about 7 years and I am still grateful that I joined the AF. If for nothing else, as was mentioned about their crazy uniforms. They actually have more than 3 and that's just too much work for me haha!
Good luck with whatever you choose.

No brainer - Navy - Uncle Sam's Canoe Club. The Navy offers a broader set of skills from which to choose. The Navy has pretty much everything except acting and farming from which to choose. It has construction, submarines, aircraft, small boats, electronics, intelligence, administration, law enforcement, combat units, nuclear power, medicine, weapons, missiles, torpedoes, and the finest special forces units on the planet. And a really cool ad.....
Besides, why join the "new" outfit? The Air Force hasn't been around as long as McDonald's! The Navy has been around since the beginning of this great country!

It sort of depends on whether or not you have sea feet or air feet. By that I mean have you spent a lot of time on a large ship before for 6 or 9 months at a time. If you can't handle it, you'll be sick for most of it. Plus there is "Hot bunking" (if you're not an officer). If it were me, I'd choose Air Force. But that's just me and because I love aircraft and flying. Don't like the idea of potentially being eaten by a shark if the ship goes down.

I'm in the Air Force and am currently deployed.(Because I stupidly decided I wanted to go back to the states after my tour in Germany and they picked me right off after I had been in the states for just 3 months. D: ) Other than the short amount of time I was given in the states before they threw me back overseas, being in Iraq isn't that bad. The extra pay is kinda nice and some of the bases they have set up are pretty good; though my base isn't. :'<
As far as I can tell from what I've heard about BMTs, the (CH)Air Force has the easiest/shortest one of them all. I've heard of people having very easy T.I.'s that joked with them and let them do things they're not supposed to allow.
My experience in the Air Force has been pretty negative. I've seen a lot of drama because of issues being blown out of proportions and there are a lot of really stupid rules(Though that might just be for all branches). There are also loads of tests and training for further certification of your job.
In tech school you're put into phases which limit your freedom to go off base, wear civvies, no curfew depending on how long you've been there. A lot of us broke phase after we got to Phase 2 and went off base in civvies or even left the immediate area.
You'll still be treated like a kid once you graduate tech school.(Unless you're married or prove that you've lived in an apartment before) They put you in the dormitories and have room inspections. I failed one JUST because a bag of trash BEHIND my door was considered a "walking hazard". You're forced to do Bay Orderly and clean up after the drunks who throw their beer bottles on the pavement and just generally trash the whole area.
You are not given a choice whether you want to eat at the Chow hall or buy your own food if you live in the dorms, they will give you the BAS and then take out meal deductions.(I was lucky my first base, our Shirt hooked us up) It's stupid because some bases have horrible Chow halls, the food is disgusting.
Not that this is relevant information to your decision(I just wanted to put it out there anyways), the new ABU(Airman Battle Uniform)s the AF is getting are ugly. And the PTU(Physical Training Uniform)s are ugly, useless and insanely expensive. $40 for MC Hammer parachute-pants. Do not want.

If you joining the navy because you think its safer you miss guided all branches have some danger onvolved in them alot can happen on a ship at sea just as it could happen at an airforce base on land. So dont let safety be an issue.

Who cares if you have to clean toilets? They take little boys and turn them into men. Why would you want to have a "safe" job? Don't join the military if you are only in it for the benefits and pay. That sounds like what you're doing to me.

what job? You will most likely deploy to iraq more if you are in the air force unless you are a corpsman or eod tech. in the navy.
