I cook all of my pizzas directly on the oven. It makes more of a mess, but pizzas turn out good. You could also try aluminum foil. I've used that successfully too.

for margherita you want a lot of heat. There was a cooking show on the BBC not too long ago where the chef used a cast iron pan and heated it up on the stove top. The whole time he had the broiler going in the oven. Then he inverted the pan and put it right under the broiler, and slid the pizza onto the hot pan.
If you just don't want to buy a pizza stone because of the price or whatever, you can find unglazed quarry tiles at home depot or lowe's that you can use instead. They are little 4" or so red clay tiles.

You can use unglazed quarry tiles. Individually, they are not as big as a pizza stone, but you can put four (or however big you find) together.

Besides the price, another advantage of unglazed quarry tiles is that you can cut them to fit your oven--just remember that you need an inch of air space around the edge. The tiles are lighter to work with, easier to clean because they're smaller, and if you break one, you can replace it for pennies--if you break a pizza stone......

If you don't have a stone, just put it on a cookie sheet or jelly roll pan, and I would place it in the lower part of my oven to get the crust crispy.

A cookie sheet, and place a tube pan of water below it, to add some steam and reduce browning. Remove the water half way through baking.

You could try a cookie sheet- that's what I use. However, it may not be as crispy.
