Why is chicken called chicken? yet cow is called beef, and pig is called pork?

I know people will say poultry... but if you go to the restaurant you don't ask for fried poultry... you ask for fried chicken.

I don't know but it sounds like a bird brain question. I guess all bird meat is called after itself. Ostrich, duck, geese, pheasant, etc. which begs to ask, why is hen also called chicken?

Because we can eat the whole bird, you wouldn't eat a whole cow or a whole pig now, would you?

how come we dont ask for a beef burger? it doesnt have ham in it? shouldnt pork be called dirty meat?
