In other words, what is the definition of the prefix ster- and the suffix -oid in reference to the actual definition of steroid?

It means "shrunken dick", which is what happens when you take them.

the suffix -oid means like or similar as for ster- i've never seen or heard of this prefix in a medical sense

Chole"sterol" is the basic and initial compound whence all hormones are produced.. A sterone is a chemical derivative of it. Steroids are "like " sterons.
