The Nikon has another million pixels (no big deal), a longer lens (more zoom) with image stabilization (a good thing on the long of a lens) and a brighter flash, but it does not have any provision for you to learn how to control the shutter speed or lens opening, which may become important to you as you find those "situations" where an all-automatic camera just can't get the picture under the conditions you face.
The Canon come out on top in the following areas:
- ISO goes to 800 instead of 400. Even though it may not be a great 800, it's still there to bail you out if you just have to get the picture.
- Shutter and aperture priority
- 3 types of metering, including spot, vs. only an averaging meter
- an optical viewfinder, which can save your batteries as well as your view. LCD's can be problematic in sunlight.
SO, it's actually a toss up. Personally, I wouldn't have a camera that didn't allow at least the option of using an optical viewfinder. I'd really prefer having the ability to set the shutter speed or aperture in a "non-auto" mode and I would demand a spot meter or at least a center-weighted option.
The long lens and the image stabilization to make it useful are compelling arguments in favor of the Nikon, though.

In my opinion I think Canon cameras are the best!! I have a Canon power shot A640 10 megapixels, it is awesome!! I wouldn't trade any camera for it.
