Not of my faith, but of our pastor's.

Well, to be perfectly honest with you I feel uncomfortable if a man seats a child on his lap. There are so many pedophiles it seems...that you just can't trust men in general. That's pretty sad.

The truth of the matter is that the clergy has a pedophile rate of less then 5%, that's less then the American male population. So, if you took a cross section you'd find more pedophiles that are not priests then ones that are. That means your children are more in danger with uncles, cousins, fathers, step-fathers, neighbors, brothers, friends, coaches, teachers, etc. then they are with a priest.

So, if I had to choose who my kids sat on the lap of...they'd be safer with a priest!

No, it is not appropriate but some priests of the older school may do it out of genuine affection.
I would tell the priest of my disapproval immediately.
Your children's well being overrides any other concern even at the risk of offending an innocent.

Things are strange. So would you feel comfortable if anyone had the habit of seating your child on his lap?

Part of protecting your kids comes from knowing the people. Part of being a parent also realizes one can not protect them 100% without taking away some good things too.

I would trust a priest before I trust unbelievers who rant and rage against God on this thread.

There is no reason for such things. Church isn't about horsey rides and stupid things, you know.
