i mean, given all the research he did for his books, wouldn't he have an edge?

Nah. What he put down was purely hypothetical, and there are things that Hannibal Lecter did, that you'd need years of training to even begin to understand how to do it. Hannibal was stone cold, nothing phased him due to years and years of psychological trauma and intentionally numbing himself to the effects of remorse and fear and anxiety. Also, a lot has changed in the way of diplomacy, protocol and technology since Thomas Harris did his research and wrote the books. In my opinion the answer is no, he'd be no better off than if he had never done the research

I think Thomas Harris is a great writer! He has a lot of imagination and I can't imagine him deciding to kill anyone, but you never know. I can think of many other authors like James Patterson, Stephen King, etc. that have as vivid imaginations.

Doubtful. Writers "tell all" thru their writing. So, they'd just have to read the novel. But it might be a challenge for the FBI to read...
