First, I want to address one issue: why can't I install XP on my brothers Dell which came preinstalled with Vista. I'm doing a fresh install on a new hard drive, not the one that came with the computer. The “blue screen of death” keeps coming up.

Second, how do I install Linux on the computer? Are there any software compatibility issues like Vista? And how complicated is the installation process? I’m a novice computer user, so I shouldn’t have difficulty understand computer jargon. Thanks for the help.

If you're a novice computer user, I would advise against Linux. Linux is quite complicated compared to Windows and unless you're pretty savvy with the command line you're going to have a really hard time.

For the vista install on the dell try contacting Dell support they are the best people to ask they will talk you through the installation... don't mention anything about the new hard drive, by installing another drive you may have invalidated the warrantee

now for linux you have not mentioned which one there are many versions if you download Novel Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop version 10.2 then it will install quite easy, you can also download the manuals in PDF format, these will show you how to install it.
with Novell suse linux you can get all the software you will ever need it downloads onto 5 cd's or you can download the DVD version, which is around 1.3 gigabytes there is the 32 and 64 bit versions, you can also download the Live DVD version with this you can run it without installing it, and you can get on the internet with it, the choice is yours
any problems give me a call

the website to get it from is below
