if you are on the near north side, try Smoke Daddys on Division; good ribs of several kinds and a cool place to eat as well....have live music several nights a week as well....mostly blues.....
1804 W Division St, Chicago, IL - (773) 772-6656
we eat at lots of rib houses, and this is among the best...has character; not a franchise like Carsons or Robinsons
Another 'institution' is Russells Ribs in Elmwood Park....not as good as Smoke Daddy's but also an 'event'....

Leon's and Carson's are the best places to get ribs, but if you're on the south side a place called the Rib joint or Lem's

More on the north side, particularly Waukegan and North Chicago, is Hillery's Ribs. Oh man... I wish I was there.

Giovanni'is Berwyn, they have won numerous rib cook-offs in the US. Carsons is OK. Gale Street in on the NW side is good, too
