Hmm... don't know if you mean Irvine (in Orange County) or Irwindale (in LA County).
Irwindale is 21 miles east of downtown LA, and is largely an industrial area. Travel time to LA depends on time of day. During morning rush hour, it can easily take an hour or more to get to LA.
Irvine is 42 miles southeast of downtown LA, and is one of the largest cities in the OC. It is a hub of technology, business, with a lot of homes as well.
As with any metropolitan area, it is MUCH more expensive to live in and around LA than most parts of the country. The 3 biggest factors are Location, location, and location. Average price in LA is about 500,000, and OC is even higher, over 600,000. Renting is similarly high. If you want someplace cheaper, you'll have to give up something: either live further away (like Riverside County or San Bernardino County), or live in a less desireable neighborhood (i.e., higher crime). Since we have such mild weather and are relatively close to the mountains and beaches, a lot of people want to live here. There is also a lot of tourism, the movie industry, and technology, for example, which drive the economy..
Good luck

OK I am sticking with the majority and calling it Irvine and not Irwindale (WTF???). Yes either places are among the most expensive places to live in the United States...and they are about, I would guess 40 miles apart...Different places are not really cheaper...It goes on a scale of 1 to 10 from--- outrageous to--- you gotta be kidding me to--- these people are out of their minds...
