I will be leaving for PI in a month and I am really excited to start training under the MCMAP. But I was a little confused about advancing in it and how long it takes to get to be a 1st degree black belt? and what exactly do they teach you in boot?

and for all the people who have gone throught it. is it fun?

I'm sure you could do an internet search and learn something about it. However, the little I do know is that it is similar to an MMA training program, but with a more brutal mentality. It has alot of grappling and some muay thai. I dunno what you learn in basic, but you can of course learn more after graduation. That being said, don't expect the Marine Corps to turn you into a champion fighter. Your primary weapon is a gun, and you'll spend plenty more time on that than unarmed combat. MCMAP is simply there for for the worst situation imaginable.

First, check out Wikipedia's entry about the program:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marine_Corps_Martial_Arts_Program
That should answer your most immediate questions. Definitely check out the links provided.

For more thorough information, check out their official pages for the program: https://www.tbs.usmc.mil/Pages/MA/default.htm
They have a FAQ section that is very specific.

Is it fun? In a word: no. Remember: it's the USMC...it's not supposed to be fun! They're training killers, not UFC fighters. The primary focus of your training will be with firearms. My brother went through it, hated it. The difference is: if your a civilian, you can just quit that dojo and go elsewhere. As a GI, you're stuck until your tour is up.

PLEASE don't misunderstand! None of what I've wrote above is meant to be discouraging...just a reality check. I deeply honor and respect our men & women in uniform who selflessly serve our country.

Semper Fi!

Everyone receives the first level belt in Recruit Training. After that, how far you get in the program is entirely up to you.

though it still may be hard core, it has been altered to reflect teh current political themes. so it is actually less lethal that prior trainings, because the voters love that peace keeping rubbish.

forget about the aim of achieving a black belt, and just get stuck in and strive to be better tomorrow than you are today. belts will come, but focus on skill. many highly skilled fighters have never aspired to a black belt. but many black belts are useless outside the structure of the training hall.

aim to be hard core outside of training, and away from belts.

I've heard that they teach you Brazilian Jiujitsu Muay Thai and Pekiti Tirsia.

If you don't know what that is, look it up.

I suggest Yahoo search.
