If you have an infection, it is a bacteria, and bacteria are killed only by antibiotics. See a doc. You don't want to mess around with infections. Remember that girl on the east coast of Canada last year that died of a piercing infection?? If it is red, swollen, and it's getting bigger, think about how close your ear is to your brain. If that infection gets in your brain?? Your buggered.
This happened to me. Ended up with a huge scab, followed by a scar on my face, I was hospitalized and almost died....'cuz I let it go too long.
With antibiotics, you can keep the earring in. The antibiotics will take care of the infection and you shouldn't have to loose the hole.

First I would try to carefully remove the stud and clean it well with isopropyl alcohol a few times a day. Put it back in the earlobe soon after cleaning it. Infected "foreign bodies" like this prevent wounds from healing and allow the infection to persist. A "foreign body" is anything not made of your tissue that is in your tissue. The stud qualifies. If you are unable to replace the stud doing this you do risk losing the piercing.
Otherwise, your doctor can give you a prescription for oral antibiotics. You may need to do both.
You don't want the infection spreading as in rare cases the earlobe can be lost. I have repaired these and it can be difficult when the tissue is heavily scarred or has been lost to the infection.

First of all, don't take it out if it's just been done, even if it is infected, or it can heal over within minutes. What you want to do is continue keeping it clean, but more so I suppose. I used something called H2Ocean on my piercings as it was easy and had no problems that can be caused from other things. you can go back to the piercer to ask questions or even a doctor if it gets really bad... but taking it out and letting it heal means having to pierce again.

My daughter had this problem, and this is how we solved it. We cleaned the area with the solution that the piercing studio sent home with us, although hydrogen pyroxide will work too. Then we put neosporin (triple antibiotice ointment) on the ear and the earring post and reinserted the piercing post. This will work on any type of piercing earring.
Keep doing that until the ear heals, and do it anytime your ear gets sore later on. Some earrings react to your ear and make them sore even after they have healed.
Good luck.

Clean the earring good with Bio-Septic found at your pharmacy, then sterilize it with boiling water. When it cools put it back in your ear and clean the ear with warm soapy water then Bio-Septic and cotton ball make sure that you turn the earring so it is getting back inside the hole. Your earring should be gold, a lot of people are allergic to different metals. Gold is the least to be allergic with. Do that several times a day but leave the earring in. Good luck.

soap and water works best...dial or antibacterial soap...don't use alcohol it causes it to dry out. you can also put an antibacterial cream like neosporin and turn earrings...do not mess with your ears withour washing your hands:) and don't mess but once/twice a day. good luck. all 5 of my kids have earrings and never had a problem:)
