I wouldn't let someone in unless I knew them personally, or could see that they were being pursued. I would do what you did, call the police. 911 can respond pretty quickly. You can't put yourself or your family in danger. I guess also, I would use my gut feeling, if I thought this really was a person in need I would try to help. Calling 911 is helping though, you did render aid.

I sure wouldn't have opened the door. There is so much evil in this world, you can not always trust that every one really needs help. The best way to help the person is to call 911 so they can get the proper help that they need.
But I would have called the police as they are better equipped than I am to handle what ever will transpire, the guy could have been on PCP.
You never open the door for some one you don't know. You will end up in a situation that you may end up regretting later.
Even if you have a gun, you are not the police to be taking that kind of action. That's why I like the security screen doors that are made of iron, harder to get into and you can talk with the person without opening the inner door.

My advice, get some ammunition for your handgun, and hit the local range or your backyard. Anyone that is banging on your door at that hour should be perceived "hostile". Even if they aren't hostile, calling the police would of been my first action because you never know these days.
Hope this helps.

1. I would call the police.
2. If I felt he was telling the truth and was in danger, I would get my gun and let him in... lock the door but keep my gun held on him until the police arrived.

I probably would have done the same thing that you did, and I would have felt badly after wards, as you do. You did the right thing. Protecting yourself and your family must come first. It means you are a good person that you feel bad.

You have the right to deny admission to the man and you can even call the policeman regarding the matter.

I would do just as you did: Call the cops. I've got a wife and child, they're my priority. What good is a gun with no bullets?

I would most likely continue sleeping. I once sleep though the tree in my neighbors yard being hit by lightning.
