I'm using both Internet Explorer and Firefox browsers and every time I try to translate English into Japanese, they come up as boxes (Explorer) or question marks (firefox)... how do I fix this? Do I have to install a language pack? If so, where?

It appears as boxes or question marks as your browser does not recognise the japanese characters.
Hence, it is a must to install the language pack.

Japan, China, Taiwan, and Korea use double byte character encoding systems that allow use of their characters. Another standard is Unicode that supports most common languages. To read J.I.S. or Unicode, you need the proper fonts. These you you can get from Microsoft if you have WIN OS. (There are also special programs available with more bells and whistles.) Afterward, you will need to select the order of viewing under internet options ie. English, Japanese... Then you shoud be able to translate to Japanese. Don't expect translations to be too accurate. I have found translation to be useful only if you have some knowledge of the target language. Since I speak passable Chinese, translation into English from Chinese helps me fill in missing words or gives me a clue when I get stuck.

It could be just your encoding, if so you need to right click >>encoding>>Japanese (auto select) or (jis)

IF this does not work they'll ask you to d/l a language pack, but sometimes this takes a long time and you'll need to find your office/xp cds to install them.

I use a program called "CJK viewer" (get it at http:/www.njstar.com/) You can view Chinese characters, Japanese Kanji and kana, and Korean Hangeul in your programs. It's a trial program and after you have it for 30 days they tell you you have to buy it, but you can just press "Agree" every time you open it or switch languages and it still works. (just like winrar/winzip).

Go to control panel, regional options, add other languages, and install East Asian languages.
