Considering it's supposed to be the word of God, it took long enough to get written, involved several contradictory authors and is, frankly, poorly written.

Shakespeare was one bloke and he churned out loads of top quality plays and sonnets. God wants to get his finger out and come up with a decent sequel - perhaps he should try a movie script to appear more modern and relevent?

The Bible is great because it is the inspire Word Of God. Yes, it is written by different authors, but that doesn't make it any less a work of great importance to mankind. The Bible has stood the test of time, and has survived amid conflicts to eradicate it from the face of the earth, efforts to nullify its message, and attempts at lessen its importance by taking cheap shots at the writers and at God Himself. But you know what? God gets the last word. He's the one who lends our next breath. He's the one who decides whether we live or die. He's the one we will all give an account to when we draw our last breath on this earth. The Bible is our road map to eternal life. That is what makes it so great. You can read Shakespeare's works until you have memorized every line, but that will never lead you to eternal life. You can watch movies until your eyes bug out, but they will be absolutely worthless in redeeming your soul from eternal death.
We tend to condemn the things that we don't understand. Please read the Bible for yourself, and pray and ask God to help you understand it. Then, you will realize the greatness and relevance of the Bible today.

The great thing about the bible is that it creates great discussion. Sadly on a counter point it's created wars. Why do you say it's poorly written? Surely it's the content, not the written sense that matters to most. Infact.. The bible matters more than a pint of milk in the morning to some, so don't bang on about the bible. If you don't know already, lots of religions stemmed from ICONS such as the Totem Pole. The symbolism was a form of communication, as was the bible. The folk who made Totem Poles couldn't write but had huge impact on primitive politics. They couldn't write either! ... SO..you need to ask yourself if you believe in God or just the stuff you read.
The Bible doesn't necessarily represent GOD...and if you think it's poorly written, then re-write it yourself and then consider youself your own personal GOD.!!!!

It's not so great, but the Koran is a bit of a mess. I've heard that there were eight different creation myths in the Koran.
