As far as scientifically studied products, any products containing Benzoyl Peroxide in some form or Salicylic Acid in some form are the better first-line treatments for acne. These compounds have been proven to have an effect in reducing overall breakouts. These are present in many over the counter preparations, and can be found in generic/drugstore-brand products - you just need a little patience to look at the "active ingredients" list on the bottles. Be cautious when trying out new products however, as some people can be allergic to these compounds, particularly benzoyl peroxide. It is best to test an inconspicuous part of skin to make sure you don't have a reaction first.
If these don't work for you (and they certainly don't for everyone), the next step would be to discuss a topical antibiotic with your doctor.
