From what I understand, there is a high percentage of people that classify themselves as Christian here in the U.S., so why does it seem that there are so many atheists in the R&S section? Is it just that the atheists have more free time on their hands?

Yes, it is disproportional, but anonymity might have something to do with it.

Actually there are more atheists in the U.S. population than there are Christians.
There are some that classify themselves as Christian that do not know what the word Christian means.
I have worked with many.
There are not as many Christians as you think.
There are a lot of religious.

Than the American population? Yes, definitely.

Than the European population? Probably not.

Than the Internet population? No. The Internets, as President Bush would say, are generally younger, and that usually means, less theistic.

(Not to leave out Asia, Australia, South America, Africa, but with the exception of Australia, they probably aren't on the English-speaking part of the site...)

I think that a lot of "atheists" on here are bored teenagers feeling rebellious, who have done absolutely no research into their sudden decision.
Just like a majority of the "Christians" on here are ill informed zealots, who have done no independent research on their choice of religion.

Sure, but it is also disporportinately religious wack jobs. It is the people on the ends that tend to be passionet about their beliefs not the broad, moderate, middle.
