My grandfather used to say 'Always keep a half crown in your waistcoat pocket because you never know when you will meet a willing wench' Not as subtle as your grandfather but easier for a lad to understand.
Presumably your grandfather's message was to be content knowing what you need and do not concern yourself with other things.
