I have a chocalate lab and im having a hard time getting her trained to not chew up things and get into the trash at night. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to brake her of this.

The single best way to train a dog is to eliminate the opportunities to be bad. This means you need to put the dog in a kennel or crate when you cannot watch it. Many people mistakenly feel this is cruel, but trainers and behaviorists will tell you this is the best thing for your dog.

Crate training cured my dog of seperation anxiety. I knew crates were the way to go when she was accidentally injured and ran to her crate rather than to me.

A crate will save your sanity and possibly your dog's life. There is stuff in the trash that can kill your dog while you blissfully sleep. Act now.

The trick is keeping the dog in a confined area for a while, and train yourself to take it out every hour and a half or so. The larger the dog, the easier they will train usually, but little ones need to be taken out night and day! They will soon find a way to let you know when they are URGENT. Good Luck! And BE PATIENT, you can ruin a good dog by slapping it even once, especially if it is a small breed.

I have a chocolate lab also and had the same problem. I reverted to crate training. It works great. The first night is the worsest though. They will holler all night. But within 48 hours they will know the deal, and know that they will spend the night in the crate. Try it. Guaranteed to work.

when you find the dog chewing calmly tell it "no" and give it a toy or bone to chew on that is approved for him. repeat for chewing habits inside and tell him good boy for chewing on toys not other things and don't tell him no if you don't catch him in the act, it does no good and just gets he/she confused.
