1. Whole prey. This means you plunk down a dead mouse, rabbit, chick...or if dealing with larger animals, you'll toss down a chicken leg (with bone in) or whatever. The cats eat the meat and organs and gnaw on the bones. This is the very very best diet for a cat, indoor or out. Chewing on the muscle meat and bone gives them strong jaws and CLEAN TEETH and also gives them their calcium. Eating the meat and organs provides them with protein.

2. Raw meat with supplements. This is preferably fed in chunks or perhaps ground or a mixture of both. They're getting the same benefits as with a whole prey diet, although it's a good idea to provide bone for dental health as well, along with supplements.

3. Canned food. There are so many reasons canned food is good for cats. This is what I'm currently feeding while I'm trying to convert my girls to eating raw.

4. Dry food. Dry food is NOT good for cats, and I only list it because it's better than starvation.

I highly recommend that at the very least, you choose one of the canned foods listed in the link below. It can be difficult to get a cat to try new foods, but it's well worth it.

A good quality canned cat food as the primary food and a bit of dry kibble every now and again is really the best diet to give a cat. When choosing a good quality canned cat food, look at the listed ingredients. It should list a protein source like "chicken" or "turkey" or "salmon" as the FIRST ingredient and another protein source as the second or third ingredient. Some good quality cat foods like Iams will list animal by-products as part of their ingredients. Some people do not like this, but I personally don;t see why animal by-products (cushed bones, innards, etc) would be harmful since in the wild, cats will eat these parts off their prey. But that's up to you. Cat food that does not contain by-products will usuay be a bit more expensive. For dry cat food, again, the first ingredient should be a protein source. It should have as little corn products as possible (very hard to find) becuase corn is carbohydrate - makes your kitty fat.
Me? I feed my cats Iams Weight Control and Eukenuba (wet canned food) and a bit of Eukenuba Indoor Formula (dry).

I suggest Iams Indoor Formula. This food provides future Hairball Problems and Weight Problems. I give my cats this all the time, but Regular Iams is also very good, but the Indoor is better for your cats environment. If you join the Iams "club" on www.iams.com you can get 2 free 4 pound bags of any brand.

Why don't you go to www.littlebigcat.com and read Dr. Jean Hovfe's article titled "Selecting a Good Commerical Cat Food" and "Why Cats Need Canned Food".

All the brands mentioned so far are really poor quality.

I tried a few brands before settling on Iams Weight Control. Most brands out there are very similar, and for me it was mostly about which one is most accessible. Just be consistent about it -- most cats are be finicky about their food and don't like change.

One bit of warning: feed your cat dry food. I used to give mine wet food (from a can) because my cats loved it so much. I noticed, however, that the litter box had a significantly more pungent smell with wet food vs. dry food. After that, dry food all the way!

One of my cats prefers the Authority Canned Chicken Adult Formula along with Purinas Healthy Blend Dry Cat Food. My other cat prefers just dry food and she will only eat Eukanuba.
