It has to do with your nutrition and what is currently going on with your body. Sometimes they show up when you are pregnant! So it is generally a nutritional thing, if you are lacking something (possibly zinc or iron) or have a recent change in health.

I wanted to say that calcium causes those lines in your nails, the bumpy ones that run from cuticle to nail tip, they don't cause spots. Spots could be due to injury, and some people insist so ( I guess we can never know for sure ) but your nails are a reflection of your health, like your hair and that is why it is more commonly believed to be nutritional causes.
I learned this in school, and noticed a little while later that I had a spot, I remembered that it was due to iron or zinc most often, which is affected when you are pregnant. I found out I had been pregnant for about 8 weeks, the time it would take for that spot to show up! AMazing.

These harmless white marks are formed when the nail is damaged before it emerges. It doesn't take much of a bump to cause this, and often you won't even remember banging your finger on something, especially as they are formed on the part that is beneath the skin, and it can take days for your nails to grow enough for this part to be visible. People used to think that the spots indicated a vitamin deficiency (some still believe this), but it is generally accepted that the marks are due to injury.
