i know you need one if you fly to another country or fly back to the united states from a country but do you need to show one to travel anywere in the united states.

The only time you would need it is if you don't have a drivers licence or other form of identification to get though security at the airport

No, you don't need a passport anywhere in the USA, and your driver's license is use to show when going thru security-when you fly within the USA...But down the road, we will all need to get a passport evenually, so better to have one than try to get one last minute...fyi

No ... only to travel OUTSIDE of the US.

You do not pass through any customs / immigration / passport control on domestic US flights. This includes Hawaii and Alaska. Although Alaska can be tricky if your plane stops in Vancouver.

Not needed in the US, but you do need it to go to Mexico and Canada. The rules are changing in leaps and bounds because Passports are hard to Counterfit.
