As a child, I thought it very important, and have retained that feeling. I think now that it helps preserve the language, and also maintains the level of civilization. When you just throw it away, like it doesnt even matter, then the level of civilization falls rapidly, as if it's all tied together somehow, just as the wisest people always thought.

I enjoy using proper grammar. I also like it when other people use correct spellings and pronunciations. I get a little laugh out of people totally mixing things up, realizing that's the way they always "heard" it, but it's all wrong. I don't know why I enjoy grammar or usage as much as I do, but I did score quite high on the English portion of the ACT.
I think that grammar is rapidly declining. People are used to speaking and typing and emailing with more thought to speed than accuracy. Many slang words and terms are fun, others are quite annoying to me.

Really there is no such thing as "correct"; you just need to communicate. Socially, however, it's a different matter. People will judge you on the quality of your grammar.

Since I don't much care what people think, I refuse to use the "correct" spelling in words that have been wrongly spelt. For example, I write "dette" instead of "debt". If I were looking for a job, however, I would behave conventionally, as I don't think a personnel director is likely to have the same knowledge of etymology that I do.

Grammar is very important to me. When people use incorrect grammar, it makes them sound like hicks. How are you gonna survive in the working world when you say stuff like "I seen you the other day." and "That aint right." When I am talking to an adult and they talk like that, it just makes me lose respect for them. Incorrect grammar is one of my biggest pet peeves.
