'Martial Way' is simply the way of war, meaning living that lifestyle will have you preparing for war every day of your life. If you practice martial arts with this mentality, then yes, they are a way of life. But if you do it for any other reason (fitness, confidence, basic self-defense) then that is not the "Martial Way' (nothing wrong with either way, just pointing out the difference). Simply put, soldiers are generally the ones who live the martial way as their lives revolve around surviving war. The everyday joe working at Applebees and taking Karate twice a week generally isn't living the martial way.

Martial Arts has been a big part of my life, not a hobby, not a pass time nor a way to meet new people. It is something I have been doing most of my life, learning & teaching...it's in my blood and life for me would not be the same with out it.
I truly enjoy teaching others at school, work or even privete lessons.

To-the-point: the "Martial Way" is living by a clearly-defined set of values and beliefs that have as their core a very strict and rigid concept of honor & loyalty. Also it is the complete devotion to the study of the martial arts and training the body & mind for such. This is the essence of budo....bushido...the Martial Way.
In 21st-century American terms, this translates as: a sense of fair play, not using your martial arts techniques for unethical/illegal purposes, not using your martial arts ability to bully and/or beat up people, etc. It also implies a certain modesty in that you are well aware of your own martial skills & abilities, and as such, you should feel no need or desire to brag or "show off." This is the true Martial Way, translated for American culture.

There is a book called "Living The Martial Way" by Forrest E. Morgan. I have read the Book of Five Rings, Soul Sword, Hagakure, and other inspiring martial theory books, but his book more than ony others stood out to me. Mr. Morgan also referenced these and other books to write his, it is an easy read, not complicated, and it will improve the way you train in martial arts. I personally feel that the main goal of living the martial way is do defeat my greatest enemy: myself.
To push my mental, emotional, social, and physical limitations beyond their current point. Beyond what my body says they're capable of. In a word: self-actualization.

Broken down in Japanese terminology, The "Martial Way" would be Bushido. Bushi meaning warrior, Do meaning way. A really good book to read is called "Living The Martial Way" by Forrest E Morgan.

hough it is hyped as a way of life, no one in the 21st century can be that traveling martial monk.
it is a hobby that enhances every aspect of your life, so it is both. most hobbies (say golf) arent useful outside of teh golf course, but teh experiences you get from triaing can and should overflow into everyday life.
tolerance
patience
determination
perseverance
threat awareness
problem solving
etc
etc
so though it is a way of improving living, I dont believe any of you people who say it is your way of life. though once it may have been hand in hand with that way, times change, and you cant be something that no longer has application. romantic notions are good for the morale, but not for reality.
we are all using it for what we need it for, and if you remove all the gloss, its all about "me" (and you).
I use it to assess situations and problems, using the logic and reasoning. I use it to ensure I am not paranoia but accurately assessing. I can lie if I wanted to, but how can I lie to myself. I am an @sshole like everyone else who walks this earth. I use the tools of martial science to ensure I have the maximum potential for success in an encounter.

There is a story about a very old man who was a Master of Kung Fu. He was walking home one night when 3 thugs decided to jump him and rob him. With the first attack, he threw all 3 of them down to the ground before they knew what happened. He proceeded to try and help the 3 men back up to their feet while appologizing profusely. Of course they thought it a fluke of luck for the old man and tried to attack him again. This time he broke one guys arm, one guys leg, and the last guy's nose and face. Again he appologized for what they forced him to do to them, helped them as much as he could, and walked home. When he got home he lit an incense and meditated, feeling just terrible about what had happened, and he never spoke about the incident to anyone.
