You can give him a little plain canned pumpkin. It has fiber in it. Some of the dog food out there is designed to be low residue, have very little that needs to become, um, poop. For some dogs this can cause more straining.

If it isn't a premium dog food, I'd try one. Good food can solve a lot of health problems.

There are a few things that you can try but remember when something isn't right, there is usually a medical reason.
If you have changed his food recently that may have caused the constipation, put him back on his old food. You can try adding a little apple to his diet, not too much, less than a quarter of a medium apple daily is plenty. If he has never had dairy, about two ounces of milk might loosen him up.
Be careful, too much of any of these things can cause diarrhea and then you have a whole new problem.

A vet is call for, but what are you feeding your dog? Good quality Dry dog food will be better for moving things along, but make sure you have plenty of clean water. Dogs need food , water , and exercise for proper care. But take him to the Vet and check for intestinal obstructions, or parasites .

I know this is going to sound gross to you, but my vet recommended this to me years ago. Go to the drug store and buy a Fleet enema, take your dog outside and give it to him. SERIOUSLY!!!!!Good luck.
