There are many reasons why bass attack buzzbaits. I will explain why LARGEMOUTH bass attack them. The first is that it is just a reaction. They are very reactive to noise, a major reason why poppers, buzzbaits, and jitterbugs are very effective under bad fishing conditions (at least here in michigan). Another reason is that it sounds like bug or small critter skittering across the surface of the water and it triggers a hunger reaction which seems like they explode at it (bass are not picky at all at what they eat so they don't really need to know what it is, as long as it fits in their mouths. The final reason is that they are very teritorial. If a female bass is on a bed, then the male (smaller than the female) will strike it. If the female strikes it, it can be an even bigger strike than when bass are feeding.

I believe it is a combination of several factors, the two highest being that bass are territorial predators, and they feed aggressively at times. When a bass is actively feeding, it will smack a buzz bait. And if they are hiding, just waiting for lunch to swim past, and that buzz bait swims overhead and crosses into it's territory, they defend their territory with the only weapon they have, their mouth.

the noise and the wake the buzzbait makes on the water really makes'em bite hard
when they get aggressive they think the bait is invading their "area" and bite the crap out of it

mostly the sound, but I don't think anyone really knows why. Alot of ideas as to why are out there. I know at the right time it is a deadly bait .If you find out let us know.

mostly i have heard that they attack them because they sound disturbing, which pisses bass off. if a bass is particularily territorial, it sees the buzzer as an intruder

They think it's something to eat. They are attracted by the sound and sight.
