You don't mention specifically why it is that you have to surrender your licence..but i would imagine that it has something to do with a mental issue..medication or diagnosis. What most people don't realize is that in most states it is against the law to drive while you are taking most anti-psychotic medications. Some psychiatrists will actually state this on your prescription so you read it and know before you fill it and start taking the medication.

As far as how long do you have before you have to surrender your licence...if they have a valid reason for asking you to..then you should be doing so tomorrow. They may have different stipulations, they may give you a week or two to do so..but it is probably in everyones best interests if you do it as soon as you can. If you do wish to drag it out to the last minute..call the department of motor vehicles and ask.

Never forget that driving when you are not medically fit to do so (and this goes out to all those that do so...especially folks that drink and drive)..is very dangerous..not only for you but especially for others. You may feel that you are able to drive safely..but if something bad happens when you do...you will be hung drawn and quartered...it's not really worth all that is it?

I'm assuming that they are asking you to surrender your license because your mental illness or the pills you take for your mental illness make you an unsafe driver. I woud think that you would have to surrender your license until you are stable again, or get the meds adjusted so that you can be a safe driver. In my opinion, the cases I've seen where people had to give up their license, they clearly were unsafe drivers.

I'm thinking that when you are better, you can have a doctor fill out a form clearing you to drive again. Do you have a social worker? If you have serious mental illness, you probably should.

You don't have to voluntarily surrender your license!

You still need it for other things!

They probably just want to update it to reflect your medical conditions.

Even if It is considered suspended. All you have to do is go back and get it updated to reflect your medical condition.

Just tell them you are to busy to do anything about it.
You are in a foreign country on vacation, etc, etc...

Just don't get busted driving.

DON'T LISTEN to Christoper... J, unless you WANT to go to jail.

If you surrender your license, or even if it's suspended, you should be able to get an "Identification Card" using the same info & photo.
Don't be afraid to call them & talk to them about your concerns.
