i feel like i am running a halfway house. is it rude to tell my house invaders to stay out of the fridge between meals? it is 5 oclock and dinner will be made shortly but they cant stay out of the fridge. I havent seen any money for food from them and i am cooking reguardless. is there some kind of etiquette they should follow? cause i am truly annoyed with the constant mess in my kitchen. thanks all for your help.

dinner is ready by 6:00 every night. my fiance's bro is a leech and i can't wait for him to leave. my fiance has had to take a few days off to come home and deal with the situation. one month is going to kill me.

hey love2bake, i am not shy but hate having to fight with them on a daily basis as it causes alot of tension in my house. I do like the suggestion of the lock on the fridge and the note. i had a little screaming match earlier tonight and now they are hiding in their room.

Definately! There is all kinds of etiquette they should follow. They should take off their shoes, contribute in some way towards food. Respect their hosts wishes. And for Gods sake clean up any mess they make. If you're cooking, they're cleaning (and not just the kitchen). End of story.

Post a very polite message in HUGE LETTERS on the fridge. Tha you are not a maid and no one is paying for your cooking serivces-Let them know that you intend to have dinner for you and your fiance at 6:00 and leave af ew take out menus on the fridge for them to order thier own dinner- I think the MOOCH will get the picture then!

A note on the fridge might do it for you! Sounds like your too embarrassed or shy to just come out and say what you want. So write it down and post it on the fridge...along with a JAR with a slit in the lid for "donations for food; y'all r cuttin into my budget". Good luck!

If they are in the fridge 1 hour before dinner, then I wouldn't cook anything for them and tell them to fend for themselves which means to either start chipping in for groceries or go out and eat.

I have the same problem, my kids will not stay out of my kitchen. They are all under 15 though, so I cannot tell them to get jobs and pay for their own food. If your invaders are old enough to fend for themselves, let them.

Only water 2 hours before dinner is the rule in our house. A chain and lock WILL WORK on the refrigerator.

This isn't an etiquette question, this is a common courtesy question, would you go to someone's house and eat all their food? Tell them to get out of your kitchen and you'll let them know when dinner is done. Sometimes you have to give it to them straight and let them know they are cutting into your budget. Help out or get out!

I'm going to guess you have tried telling them. I had one roommate who was so bad I bought a length of bike chain long enough to fit around the fridge and padlocked it. It is extreme, but it solves the problem.

Tell them it is annoying you. You got to stand up for yourself. Quit buying and cooking food. Let them fend for themselves for a little while. Then maybe they will offer to help out a little with the bills.
