In one word "MORTALITY".
Following the attack on the Twin Towers on 9/11, the attendance in church's went up nearly 55%. Since the wars in both Afganistan and Iraq have been going one, church attendance has gone up another 40%. If there was a God in your life, you would be with all the rest praying that such would never happen again. Events like Hurricanes, War's etc, call our Mortality into question...young, old, middle-age, it makes no differance...death comes when our time is up. Death scares the hell out of us, but it is only by the grace of God that many go to and through a very holy and often quick death. A tragedy forces us to examine our lives and asks us if we are read to see Our Creator. Are you prepared? That my friend is what suddenly takes hold of people. That's why church attendance goes through the roof...MORTALITY.

A faithful and true Christians pray at all times. Thousands may fall besides you, but a person who calls on God will be saved. You don't have to pray. He knows already you need Him.
Why blame God for a disaster. Where are you when you are suppose to worship God at least one day in a 7-day week. What have you done to big trees that are suppose to protect you from tornado or hurricane? Even atheists call God on time of disaster. Why wait? They must be nuts.
Pray without ceasing!

Generally the distressed, the needy, the intelligent and the inquisitive, who have performed some pious activities, worship or begin to worship the Lord. Others, who are thriving on misdeeds only, regardless of status, cannot approach the Supreme due to being misled by the illusory energy. Therefore, for a pious person, if there is some calamity there is no other alternative than to take shelter of the lotus feet of the Lord. Constantly remembering the lotus feet of the Lord means preparing for liberation from birth and death.
This material world is certified by the Lord in the Bhagavad-gitä as a dangerous place full of calamities. Less intelligent persons prepare plans to adjust to those calamities without knowing that the nature of this place is itself full of calamities.
The duty of the sane person, therefore, is to be undisturbed by worldly calamities, which are sure to happen in all circumstances. Suffering all sorts of unavoidable misfortunes, one should make progress in spiritual realization because that is the mission of human life.

Well, whenever humans think they are in control, there is no need for God. However, when life spins out of control and it can happen to all of us at any time - man realizes his great need to humble himself before God who is in perfect control - not only of this life but of the Eternal.
An "out of control event" can be a personal event like the loss of a dear one, or a bad doctor's report - or a public event like a hurricane, tornado or earthquake.

If there was a God, he must have caused the hurricane, tornado, or natural disaster.
Its because they only want to come to church when they really can't do anything about anything.

God allows these things to occur to bring us closer to Him and for some people they understand the wake up call right away and others think that I only need God for now and I will not need Him until another situation comes up. Plus, He only allows the satan to do so much, try reading Job in the New Testament.

People either go for social reasons, or that they need to temporaily show themselves appeasing whatever God might punish them if they dont acknowledge him, or they go out of guilt or fear. It was the same reasons people reached out to God after 9/11.
The fact is these things happen because of the curses due to our sin. For the people the genuinely turn to God in hard times, they will be rewarded. Your assumption that "this world would be perfect if God existed" is flawed to the core. Only if you read the Bible and see the truth of humanity for yourself will you ever understand.

When something tragic happens in someones life most people tend to focus on what is really important in life...like God...they tend to focus on their own mortality and the spiritual consequences of their prior actions. It is sad, but it often takes a tragedy before many turn to God.

Sure they happen. What makes you think God will not allow nature to just happen. We live in a sinful world and all kinds of nasty things can happen. It is good for people to call on God in times of trouble. Who else can bring comfort and help at that time?
