You have to train yourself to drive in snow. Reduce your speed, increase the distance between yourself and the car in front of you. Do everything in moderation; pretend you have a raw egg between your foot and the pedals. Shift to a lower gear so that the engine does some of the braking for you when you want to slow down, and start slowing earlier when approaching a stop.

My friend just bought a 2002 protege 5 and right after the first snowfall ran out and got a set of 15" steel rims with winter tires, it's great now. The 15" size will give you a 60 wall height, much better for winter then the 50 series on it originally.

Winter tires will help, but not dramatically. You need to understand that driving on snow is a very special kind of driving and requires special skills. Try to attend advanced driving school if you have money, or practice on a deserted parking lot if you don't.
