When Australia was settled often the herders did not have adequate shelter so they slept with the herd dogs in a big pile the colder the night then the more dogs you needed.
A three dog night is pretty cold.

It's just not a band children. Around the 1700's it is how they described how cold it would be. cold a 1 dog night meaning 1 dog would sleep with you to keep you warm. Colder 2 dog night and so on.. Fact...

It refers to cold weather. When it was real cold it was a three dog night (meaning more dogs allowed in the bed to keep you warm).

A slang term for a hangover. There is the old advice that you need some of "the hair of the dog that bit you" after a particularly bad night of partying and drinking. The morning after those REALLY bad nights it takes more than a little of the hair -- hence the term three dog night.
It is also a term used in the areas where dogs are used to pull dogsleds, such as in Alaska. On brutally cold nights, mushers use their dogs to keep warm by pulling one or more of the dogs next to them to absorb their body heat. The coldest nights require three dogs to stay warm enough.

I believe it refers to sled dogs. A really cold night would be one when it took three dogs to keep you warm.
