I will be going to see a dermatologist for the first time ever (at almost 31) and i'm kind of nervous. I have severly dry skin on my face which i'm worried about (i've upped my water intake and wash my face twice a day and slather lotion on at night) and nothing seems to be helping, so i've made an appt. with the derm. My question is, what should I expect on my first visit? Will there be a lot of poking around with needles? Scraping? Tests? Just curious. Thanks!!

Most likely the dermatologist will listen to you (state the problem and what you've done just as you have here) look at your face and suggest a treatment which may involve a prescription drug. Very easy so don't worry at all.

No worries :-)
I go to the dermatologist frequently for dry skin issues and my visits have been very helpful.

When you are in the room with the doctor, you will explain & point out your problem areas. The doctor may touch the problem area & will generally make a diagnosis on the spot & explain in detail.

You may leave with a prescription to get filled & samples. You will also more than likely have a follow up appointment to see if the prescription is working.

Good luck!

Going to a dermatologist is usually one of the least invasive doctor visits I've ever had. Usually on your first visit, they will ask allot of questions, get some history, and examine your skin up close and under either a lighted magnifying glass or through strong eye goggles that the doctor will wear as he examines your pores. He'll make note of your skin's condition while a nurse or assistant writes down his notations. I've never had a scraping but if you need one, they are usually very minimal in discomfort. He'll likely be able to prescribe a treatment without anything major. If he needs to do something major, as in remove a dark mole, they usually set up a second appointment for that and give you information on what they will do.

I feel confident in saying your visit will likely be a breeze!

Wishing you well,
Sadi

There should not be any needles involved AT ALL. No poking nor anything else that is painful. In fact, the dermatologist should be able to just look at your condition, and provide you with an appropriate diagnosis. One of the culprits to your problem could be that you are washing your face too often.
Good Luck. Your Friendly Dermatologist.

Every time I've gone to the dermatologist they just look at me and ask questions. I've gone for acne and eczema. I'm usually really nervous about doctor visits but the dermatologist is nothing big, its relativly easy as far as doctor visits go.

the dermatologist will probably ask a lot of questions at first and check the overall condition of your skin, you will probably end up with a prescription for cream or something, but i wouldnt expect the derm to poke and prod you with needles! maybe a small sample or something but it shouldnt hurt... if in doubt, ask when you get to your appointment and the derm will tell you exactly what he/she plans to do. i recently saw an ENT specialist and ended up with a probe up my nose, which i was completely unprepared for, so ask first!!
