This is only my opinion, but speaking as someone who has raised numerous male cats over 24 years, I'm in full agreement with the first answer.
The second one amazed me - it's incredibly irresponsible to let your heat seaking missile (which is what your boy will be at the moment!) out right now, he'll go for any female cat he can find and if she has not been spayed, he could end up diseased, or as Vicci quite correctly said, a father. It's wrong to think he's clear of any dangers just because he's not the one who would have the kittens: one of my friend's cats got hit by a car going across the road to see his babies. I'm not trying to scare you, just pointing out facts.
He will rip your furniture up and will pee everywhere, though, if you don't get him fixed. I'd get him sorted if I were you - it is kinder, and FAR safer.

Males don't "technically" go in heat, but they are sexually mature at this age. Many times, if there is a female anywhere in the area, they will cry and want to go outside. If you let him out, he will find the female in heat. He may be gone several days. If this is a concern, I would definitely have him neutered. A good age to do that is 6 months old, so you are past your time. Unless this a purebreed that you are thinking of "studding," I would definitely take him to the vet and have him fixed.

For Heaven's sake! Isn't this cat neutered??? Males do not go "into heat", so to speak. But if there is a female in heat anywhere in near vicinity, he will want to get at her. No . . . do not let him out. That's where all the unwanted kittens come from. Get that cat neutered!!!

Only females go into heat. But please do not let your cat out if he's not neutered. All pets should be spayed or neutered to help stop the millions and millions and millions, (try 8 million), of unwanted and neglected animals that have to be put down every year . Please have your kitty neutered. Otherwise he'll only help, however willingly, any female who's in heat to create more kitties when there are already thousands in shelters looking for good homes. I've heard of low cost programs to help us spay/neuter domestic pets and stem the tide of unwanted animals. Your vet may know.

male cats don't go into "heat"... for a male, it's called "Tomming". It starts at about 6 months of age, and no, i wouldn't let him outside, unless you want a neighborhood of kittens running around ! (lol) You might want to consider getting neutered.....as soon as possible, because male cats, when they're 'tomming', "spray" urine / scent all over everything, and that smell, is very hard to get rid of. Plus, it's healthier for him TO be neutered.

Males are perpetually in heat. That being said....
NEUTER THE CAT!
It is not only the gals that need to be fixed. Boys can't give birth but they are the ones who make a gal give birth by their sperm deposits in said kitty's womb.
If a boy is not neutered he is at risk. Health wise, physically, mentally, ect...
Un neutered boys "roam" and they fight for territory and therefore get bit and then contract Feline AIDS, Leukemia, Septic Infections, Rabies, Ect. Rabies can be given to humans. Any cat bite/scratch can get infected too. They also will infect other cats that get in their way on a bad day. Not fair to the sweet kitty outside sunning himself is it?
They also end up looking messed up physically due to these illness's and from fighting scars.
They also get UTI's 10x more than neutered males. Left untreated an UTI is a deadly and down right painfull way to die.
I saved a stray that was hours from death due to an Urinary tract infection. His pee-pee was drooling blood out of it. Not dripping, drooling. His bladder needed to be flushed, he had blood clots, infection of the body in general stemming from his UTI (Septic Poisoning), distended penis (won't go back inside, stuck, exposed, painful) he had a catheter in his little pee pee for 3 days.
Not a nice or cheap experience. He is now on special food for cats with a sensitive UT. It can also re occur if he is not watched carefully for the first symptoms. Those can be cured with anti's not the end results of neglection.
He can also get certain types of cancers that neutered boys can't.
Basically to neuter the boy is his best bet. It is the best gift you can give him in his entire life. besides follow up medical care when needed and food and love and shelter.
NEVER throw him outside. Buy a urine, smell, stain spray remover from a pet store or even "Walmart" it is less than 10$ and works MIRACLES! NO more smell or stains! IF all you have is wood/tile floors and furniture without cushion/fabric then you can use hot water and strong detergents. How realistic is it that you don't have cushioned/fabric furniture though? Don't be cheap either you will need this spray if and when un neutered kitty sprays his spray in your home. People will tell you your house stinks because it will without the spray that specializes in cat urine odor/stain removing.
NEUTER!!!!!
Call your local animal control/shelter to get info on lowcost neuter/vaccinating services. They do exsist. Ask. Follow up. Your boy kitty deserves it and needs it to live as do you!

Of course you shouldn't let him out! You won’t have to worry about kittens, but some other family, or a stray cat who doesn’t have the resources to care for kittens will.
Do the responsible thing and get him neutered. All your problems will be solved.

Your cat needs to be neutered, first thing. Don't wait on this and be very careful that he doesn't escape.
Then, NO cat should be let outside. It's irresponsible and condemns your cat to the possibility of suffering a horrible death. Keep him inside for life and have him around longer and healthier.
