I volunteered at my church last year and I wanted to know if I could do something with my taxes.

You can't deduct anything for the value of your time. You can deduct any unreimbursed out-or-pocket expenses, including mileage at 14 cents a mile, as charitable contributions if you itemize.

Time is not a deduction for charity. However, if you keep track of mileage to and from the place you are volunteering and any errands or trips you take for their benefits, you can deduct 14 cents a mile. If you volunteer through a meal and you pay for your food, that can be deducted. I once did taxes for a family that the Mom and Dad volunteered on a ski patrol. They were able to deduct there ski equipment, food and lodging and most of there trips. They kept every receipt and were challenged once, but IRS allowed all the deductions. I hope this answered your question.

14 cents a mile to and from the church, that is it. Volunteer work is not a deductable item, just the mileage to and from.

Not unless you volunteered in some professional capacity. For example, you are a contract janitor as an occupation and you cleaned the church for free. By your question, the answer would be no.
