My meter reads high, I have gone through two batteries in 4 months. I took the alternator off and took it in to advanced. they said it was good, and my INTERnal voltage regulater may be bad. I went to another shop to get a price on a alternator, they got one out and it said that particular type of alternator was externaly regulated by the cars computer.

It's controlled by the PCM "Power train Control Module". It controls your timing "ignition and fuel injectors", shifting "if automatic, charging, etc. The PCM controls the field to the alternator thus increasing or decreasing it's out put voltage. Try cleaning the plug to the PCM any moisture or dirt in it will make go nuts, it's mounted behind the air filter box on an XJ and on the fire wall passenger side in a Wrangler. If you want open it up and take a look at it, you won't damage it it's not a sealed box. If the sealant over the board is all split and cracked up it time for a new one. If you don't your Jeep will do some voodoo freaky stuff while you are driving, I know it's happened to me.

The first two answers are wrong. Your Jeep's alternator is controlled by the ECM, there is no regulator in the alternator, its built into the computer.

There are two small wires going to the back of your alternator, one is the field voltage and should constantly cycle between 10-12 volts to control what the alternator is putting out, no voltage here and your alternator won't put out anything. Constant 12-14 volts to that wire and your alternator will put out 18-20 volts! The other small wire is just a feedback wire for the ECM, it tells the ECM what the alternator is putting out so it can adjust the field voltage accordingly.

Testing your Jeep's alternator is explained here:

Doesn't sound like you need a new alternator, but if you do, check out the Dodge alternator swap:

All 95 Jeep Wranglers have an alternator with an internal regulator. Replace the whole alternator. If the alternator you have is externally regulated, then you don't have a 95 Jeep Wrangler. Find out what you do have for sure.
