Sure. You can declare it lost anytime before the 5 minute rule makes you. I used to play at a course in Fort Walton Beach, Florida where alligators lurked. Any ball hit near their habitat was lost the second it landed.

yes. Lets say the ball goes flying over a patch of poison ivy in to the woods that arn't out of bounds or a hazzard. Noone wants to go through to look for it. Are you really going to sit there for 5 minutes waiting for them to play their new ball?

He can declare it lost at any time. but why not search until the time expires. If it is declared lost he loses stroke and distance. If he finds it he can play from where it lies if its not OB.

I'm pretty sure he can. Why not use up all 5 minutes for search anyway?
