In our city, once you are released from prison and are finished with parole/probation, you are on your own. If the person then dies (of natural causes, we would have records if it was a murder) we would not have any record of it.

The police station might know - but a better idea would be to contact the prison. Is there a board of prisons in your state, or a department of corrections, or some agency like that?

You said he 'was' in prison for 10 years, not 'has been' in prison. Does that mean he was released? If he was, how would they know is he was still alive? If he died in prison, they should have contacted the next of kin. Is that you? In either case, the Department of Corrections (aka prison system) would be a better option than the police.

Call the local city hall in which your dad may live. or call the prison he was incarcerated at. most guys that get out have to see a parole officer for some time after release. Start there and find out if your dad even got out of prison alive

Calling the police station won't help you. If he is in prison, then you would have to call the prison where he is and ask them.

Chances are if you call your police satation, they will just tell you he is in prison, but not much more than that, if they even have a record at all.

It would be better of you contact your State Bureau of Prisons. Just give them his name and when he was incarcerated. It would be better if you went in person because I don't think you're going to get anything done over the phone or thru an email.

Sure you just need to give them his name and birthdate. The police do this to allow the prisoners visitors.

You can always file a missing person report. Where I used to work they were a pain in the butt because we had to investigate all of them. It is up to the department though.
