Step 1: Decrease contamination - wash the wound with a good anti-bacterial soap like betadine or chlorhexidine. Try to get out as much of the dirt and "foreign body" as possible. If you cannot get out much of the dirt or it is ground in or there are large cuts, then seek medical attention.
Step 2: Maintain moisture and anti-infective coverage - liberally place triple antibiotic ointment over the area cleaning daily as needed in the shower to remove excess wound gel and ointment.
Step 3: Minimize discoloration - Keep the wounded area out of the sun. Cover it while it is fresh and when all scabbing is gone use sunscreens (SPF 30 or higher) for a year.
You will get some scarring, but this will help minimize it. Good luck.

To prevent an infection would be the key,to prevent a scarring problem. A scape or road "rash injury" is treated like a "minor" burn, with antibiotic "neosporin" cream, sterile "telfa" non-adhesive dressings.Keep it clean and covered, apply the neosporin, and change the dressing everyday,if there are signs of infection you may need to see your MD. Take care. SW RNP
