Well my friend, this will most likely be your best answer:
I myself am joining the Army, and my MOS will be Military Police(31B). MP will teach you arresting tactics, laws, procedures, train you to use police dogs, etc... Military Police is the hardest police training on the planet (for the exception of like swat forces) so pretty much you will be ready for anything police academies throw at you later in life. Only difference is MP is Federal Laws, and Police, and State Police aren't. Also being in the military alone will help you get a job as a cop, let alone being in Military Police. If you had to pick from 10 applications and all were average people out of school, etc... and then you had one who served 6 years in the Army, came out as a Sergeant and his job was Military Police... who would you pick? Obviously the MP guy...
After I get out of the army, im going to be a cop for a year or two and then go to the state police academy... if you have any further ?'s msg me on AIM name is Jurgill08, Trust me I did my homework on this stuff..

I'm a probation officer and used to work at the recruitment/hiring office at our local police academy, so I know a few things about this.
Being an MP in any branch of the military will give you a certain set of working skills that will help you become a police officer because of the experience you will gain.
However, most law enforcement agencies are now requiring at LEAST a two-year college degree to hire on. I'm thinking with a 2-year degree and 1 tour as an MP, that might be a good start, depending on which department you're trying to work for. Some departments will even put you through the police academy with that kind of education/experience.
That said, if you're wanting to work in a major metropolitan police or sheriff's department, then you're really going to need a 4-year degree. For liability reasons, they really insist on that now.
Also, I can NOT stress enough how critical it is to focus a lot of attention on your writing skills. That's the first thing the hiring agencies want to see if they're hiring you from the academy... all the reports you've written while you're in. And they read them, in detail... so NEVER slack on reports.

Well for one thing Army training does not equal POST training. However you will have some knoweledge of laws rules and regulations. you will be physically fit. You would of had some real life experiance in dealing with criminals. Plus you will have to have at a minimum of a secret clearance in order to become a MP.

near future? not much. it doesn't transfer directly to civilian police force. also, you might not get to get out of the army as fast as you'd like because of stop loss.
