My cat wont keep a collar on either. Just don't put one on him. If you want it for Identification get him microchipped instead.

Sounds like the collar is too loose.

It should be tightened so that you can slide your index finger between the collar and the cat's neck.
Any tighter and it will have difficulty swallowing - any slacker and it will slide over it's head.

Make sure you use a collar that has an elasticated section on it - for the cat's safety.

It may take a few weeks for the cat to get used to having this 'thing' round it's neck.

You haven't said how old your cat is. It may just take some getting used to it. Have you checked that one particular collar doesn't have something scratchy on the inside ? I had to change the type of collar for mine - a soft collar didn't work but a more plasticised collar (with a BIG bell as he's a hunter) did.

If you can, I'd recommend getting a collar which has an easy pull-apart catch. We bought a variety called CatSafe in the USA. I know that this means you might lose a few, but even elasticated collars have problems. One of my girls came in with her elasticated collar all the way under one armpit! We changed her for a sort of soft plastic which has grooves in it which snap if she gets caught. It took me 5 different shops/vets to find someone that stocked it, but it's worth it for peace of mind.

Not really answering your question but if you have a cat who likes to climb trees my vet told me not to put on collars because sometimes a twig or branch can go through and under the collar and cats have been known to get caught and strangled.

Give up! I have 3 cats at the mo - 2 are fine with collars and the other had chosen to wear her neck accessory in a variety of places, including corset and hipster, so really, just give up. Some cats aren't meant to wear them.

Maybe the collar is too big/thick. I had the same problem, but when I bought a thinner collar, she was ok with it.

Instead of a collar get him a harness - those are a lot harder to get off! You can get them with a break-away section so that if they get caught on something the harness will come apart so they won't strangle themselves. (PetsMart or Petco carries them).
