In a perfect world!! Ethics, communication (particularly listening), child psychology, first aid/CPR, stress management, safety, nutrition, child development, economics, financial planning.... gosh there are a million things it would have been nice to have known before-hand.

I'd also like to think we would receive counseling to help us understand the importance of patience, humility, generosity, an attitude of gratitude, and the ability to maintain a sense of humor. Parenting is impossible without these things.

3. How to discipline a child

4. How to prepare a child for school.

1. spanking can be OK
2. Hitting, spitting, kicking and screaming in your face are not part of a child's normal "growth" and how they deal with anger
3.Being your child's friends will screw them up for life!
4. Saying no is as powerful as saying I LOVE YOU!
5.a lot of Money, Things and Label Clothing on your child does not make you a good parent or them well behaved children!
6.a lot of Money, Things and Label Clothing on your child does not make them feel loved or safe
7. No its not the day cares problem or the schools problem when its your kids its your problem!
8. As hard as it is to except sometimes what everyone(teachers, principles, daycare, other parents, neighbors, family ,friends) is saying to you about your child might be true and you might have
helped cause it!
9.Don't sweat the small stuff kids fall a sleep in their clothing it happens, they get dirty, they don't eat, they don't sleep, they get sick so roll with it
10. Letting a child over 6 months of age cry will not kill them or scar them even to sleep
11. Mistakes happen and as long as they where done in love then you learn from it and move on!
12. Doctors, Teachers, and other authority figures are not god and you know your child so you have to push sometimes
13. Talking over your child head and trying to get a two year old to understand something like " Oh don't hit little johnny see he is crying and remember when you got hit by Timmy yesterday and you cried and were sad? now you hit johnny and he is sad like you yesterday" they don't care they don't want to care they don't really remember to much of yesterday so keep it simple! Don't hit it hurts! you need to be nice!
14.That the way they tell you to talk and deal with your kids in most child development classes will not work for everyone ( and yes i have a degree in early childhood ed and have worked with kids for 15 years and take current classes) That since the concept of talking everything over and over and not spanking has hit a all time high that most children in schools across American are more violent and commit more crimes then ever before so sometimes you need to go with your gut not just what a expert says!
15.your the only person who truly is looking out for your child so don't count on the school , the daycare, friends teachers your the only person who truly is looking out for your child's learning, development, social skills, morels, values, health! you are the one they have!

Common Sense

They should learn how to be responsible.

Then they need to learn how to properly discipline their children as that seems to be a lost function in today's family. Most parents either try to buy their child's love or try to be their friend. That capacity comes MUCH later in life.

Teach the children how to behave in public and mind their manners. Teaching them to respect their elders and authority wouild go a long way too....

actually they do have those. check with the local library or human resources department. The main thing they need to look at more is how to handle stressful situations with a toddler

Should-
How to properly discipline your child
How to NOT be a doormat to your children
Why you shouldn't spoil your kids
How to make time to be a family/parent.

Should NOT:
Why spanking will scar a child for life.
Why my kid should have everything he/she wants
We have to stay married because we have kids.

How not to forget what being a child was like.

Strategies for discipline should be taught, how to communicate, and how to set limits. Spanking should not be included. And it should teach other ways to watch your child in a crowd other than one of those leash backpack things.

parents should learn that before they can take care of others, they must first learn how to take care of themselves.
