Many Catholic folk don't know what the Gospel is. Something every Christian should know on the spot. A Christian is someone saved by grace following Jesus. Many of Catholic backround are following just plain ole religion with no actual personal relationship with God. That's why many can't tell you if they're saved or not. So in a nutshell Christianity preaches the Gospel, while Catholocism preaches performance based religion. Very good question.

Christianity as a religion is broken up into many smaller groups.

One is The Roman Catholic church, which is one of the earliest churches. Many people think of it as the "First" or original church, but that could be argued about.

Another group is the Eastern Orthodox Church, which split from the Roman Catholics around about 1045 AD.

The Protestant Church, started by Martin Luther (sort of) in the early 15th century, opposed some of the practices of the Roman Catholic Church at the time.

The Protestant Church then broke up into lots of denominations, including Baptist, Methodist, Calvinist, Lutheran, etc. There are also congregations that consider themselves "non-denominational."

When people differentiate between "Catholics and Christians" they are usually referring to the segments of the Protestant denominations that assume they are the "true church."

I'd recommend you poke around the wikis for Christianity, and maybe beliefnet.com to learn more, or (better yet) take a college level religion course on Christianity.

Happy reading!

The Catholic Church IS a Christian Church and yes we have been born again with baptism and yes we have been saved. The Catholic Church is the first Christian Church. All of the Christian Church's owe their beginning to the Catholic Church that carried the torch and many martyrs gave their life for the Catholic Church so these Christians could have Christianity today so do not let them tell you any different because they will try. Some but not all, are so ungrateful it's not funny. They do not even appreciate our Blessed Mother. They spout Bible this and Bible that but, they ignore it when the Blessed Mother says in the Magnificate "All generations shall call me Blessed" They say, if anything she was lucky. Jesus at the judgment will know who is his and who is not because he will know who calls his Mother Mother. Those who do not will be cast out as they are not the Body of Christ. The Body of Christ loves his Mother.

Are you a Roman Catholic or an Eastern Orthodox Catholic? In either case, you are also a Christian. Christianity is the one true faith. Each of the 3,000 denominations is the only way to get to heaven.

the difference is more between protestants, and Catholics, because both are considered Christians, because both believe in Christ, it's just that the two, differ on some points, like the mother Mary , for instance, but they both believe in the holy trinity , the father the son and the holy spirit, three separate, but yet one... both need to stick together and defend one another, on rights because we have more in common with each other, than most know, anyways the thing we have in common the most matters the most loving our lord and savior Jesus Christ, the none believers can never take him away from either of the two religions!

Authority of the Pope & differences in beliefs in the Seven Sacrements.

Henry the 8th broke off 'cas the Pope wouldn't grant him a divorce. Since then people started thinking of Christianity in terms of "Caffiteria" --- I can do this, but not that. Catholics too are guilty of this, and some don't take the Eucharist 'cas they can't follow the authority of the Pope.

The Euchrist (transubstantiated through Jesus -> Peter-> Pope ->Priests). Catholics believe that during Mass the Euchrist is actually turned into the "Body & Blood" of Christ. Some other Christian groups take this metephorically. Same thing for Sacrement of Reconcilliation ---> authority to forgive sins passed from Jesus through Peter through Popes to Priests.

The following link is about "Solo Fila" ... another difference, and you may use St. Anthony's Web-Search for more 411.

OK so that didn't answer your question at all .. here's a really neat web site explaining the differences between all Christian denominations.

Christianity refer res to anyone you be lives and worships Jesus and God. The Roman Catholic church is the church that Jesus' disciple John created under the instruction of Jesus so therefore Catholics are Christians. there is a difference between Catholics ans protestants the Protestants left the catholic church because they did not believe in some of it politics. Man protestants doot like catholics and that is a very clothed minded this to do because we all believe in the same thing but chose to do so differently. also there are many different protestant denominations because there are many different opions among people. This was a big problem in my family because me and my family are devote catholics and my aunt and her family are protestants. Her kids pretty much told me i didn't believe in Jesus and was going to hell so I'm a little biased. The Episcopalian church or church of England came into existence b/c the king wanted a divorce but the pope wouldn't let him and he created the Episcopalian church it is very similar to the Catholic church.
Jesus wanted there to be leaders in the church to guide people it is not nessisary to confess to a priest but some people like it ( i hate it i went to confesstion twice and it was terrible.)
Protestants do not follow the teaching of the pope.
protestants belive that what is in the bible is all literal but thwey forget that it is a lol of paribles and different versions to appel to a certain audience
Catholic's do not worship Idols or Mary

As a Catholic you should know that the Catholics are the original Christians. Other sects of Christianity broke away from the Catholic church.

Catholism is a religion based on Christianity. It is actually the origional religion of CHristianity.

To make it more clear here is an explanation. Christianity is a faith based on Jesus Christ being our lord and Savior. He died for our sins on a cross and was resurrected three days later. The Bible is our Holy Scripture from which we learn our faith and how to live our lives according to that faith.

Catholism is a religion, a man-made set of practices, rituals, and customs based on how the Apostles and direct disciples of Jesus taught from the beginning. Catholism follows the Christian faith and it's Holy Scripture, the Bible. It can be compared in a way to the Baptists. Another religion drawn from the Christian faith but with different practices, rituals, and customs.
