God sacrificed himself... to himself... to appease himself... for wrongs done to himself.

Dont forget: ...for wrongs done to himself by a creation that he allegedly KNEW would act in this fashion.

My theory is that God actually harborred some real hate for Jesus, and needed a scapegoat to murder him. So, he creates us, then lays a trap (placing a forbidden tree in the middle of paradise and saying "Eat anything you want - except for this one right here in the prominent MIDDLE of the garden...") and when we fall for it, he blames us and THEN can send Jesus to die...

What kind of omniscient being would TEMPT his creation by placing a tree in the middle of the garden and then commnad us not to eat from it. Thats akin to your mother leaving drugs on the coffee table and telling her teenaged son not to take any. Or, a father leaving porn out and saying not to look at it. Its ridiculous and a trap. For that matter, WTF does an all powerful God need Blood Atonement for? If he is so powerful, why not wave his hands in the air and be done with it?

that's not what happened...

Jesus wasn't God sacrificing to Himself really, Jesus was God taking the sins of the world upon Himself so we could be cleansed from sin, instead of just temproarily pardoned by animal sacrifice.

God didn't sacrifice Himself to appease Himself. God sacrificed Himself, FOR us. And did Jesus commit any sin? no. So how can you conclude that He did wrong to Himself?

I am wondering just a little as to your conclusion. The story of Jesus makes complete sense. Jesus was sent as messenger of God, to show people the way. To prove his existence. Jesus was a mortal man during his time on earth. God used Jesus to let people know that there was a right way and a wrong way. God so loved his people that he sacrificed his only son to be sure that they understood.

There ya go. But you have your own ideas anyway so mine won't matter to you.

Very good. You understand that for us to have redemption the only way was for God to make a covenant with Himself. The only way to do that was to be both God and man. Excellent.

I understand exactly what you mean. I was just thinking this yesterday.

And the argument is that God and Jesus are different? I thought they were different forms of the same being. I'm interested to see if someone has a logical answer for this.

I suppose one could say that He wanted to demonstrate His love for us.

OK, then suffer for you own sins then, if God's way does not make sense.

God had to punish sin, otherwise he would be compromising his sense of justice.

God also need a public demonstration of how seriously he takes sin, otherwise people would think that their sin was no big deal, and they would keep doing it.

Hum, a thumbs down for giving an honest answer (and for giving a link to a web-page where this question is discussed in detail). Obviously someone doesn't really want this question to be answered.

Yes.

Longer answer - you forgot about people. We cannot appease God - so He provided a way.

But maybe you've never heard of sacrifice.

Here's a thought: In the OT God did his works spiritually. But maybe due to man's betrayal time and time again, He sent down J.C. to show us physically. (NT)
