I just got a almost 2 year old spanial Lucky. He was really good at first he would eat bones and treats and not a lot of food, but we figured that it was because he was neutered just a day or so ago. When we got him he was and still is very skinny. I dont think he was properly fed. You can see his ribs. So we know we have to get him to eat. He wouldn't eat our other dog Max's food. So we got him puppy food to help him gain wait and becuase the pieces are smaller. When we got home he ate a bowl. Now he will not eat any of it or any of his treats. He has kennel cough and is constantly hacking. I dont know if loss of apetite could be a part of it or if something is wrong! Please help me help Lucky!! :)

Time for a vet visit, if it has kennel cough he needs antibiotics to start with. Being off food isn't good and could be any number of problems they can help with once they find the cause.

Is the dog drinking water, normal urine and stools? If the answer to any of that is no, you need to get to the vet today. Being a brand new dog to the house you have no idea if he came with worms, parvo, or god only knows what. Take a stool sample with you, even if it's just worms they can get bad enough to kill an animal if left untreated.

If the dog is being treated for the kennel cough and seems to be drinking ok and going to the bathroom ok. No discomfort going, no trying to go and nothing coming out, no runny stools. You can try to get him to eat some chicken and rice, it is the most mild thing you can give an dog with upset tummy that smells good to them and usually they will eat it. Boil up a bit (1/2 cup) skinless chicken cut to small chunks, cook up a bit of minute rice (1/4 cup dry) made with low sodium chicken broth instead of water, mix them together and give it to the dog once it's cool.

If the dog will eat this it may just have an upset tummy right now, but I would still take it to your vet for a thorough check up as soon as you can.

Try some people food for Lucky. Most dogs love a scrambled egg or two. If you can buy the big cheap can's of people food beef stew, you can try some of that in Lucky's bowl too.
Stop giveing your dog bones because they splinter. Soak the puppy chow in warm broth and see if he will eat that. We had to change dog chows for a Samoyed because she was having a problem with beef.. she enjoys the alternative feed plus a scrambled egg every day. We never give the big dog bone treats because one time I broke one in two and found a plastic bristle like from a brush in it. I break little dog bone treats in two to check for bristles and/or my dogs get a bowl of milk.. (which they would like to sneek from the cat anyway) Sea Dog dog food is great for the dogs who love fish too. I like to use it for treats since snitching from the cat is such fun.
Keep a close eye on Lucky. He may have a very serious problem. Call your vet, since Lucky just had an operation I think he needs to be informed about Lucky's cough Right Away.

This is something I would definately call your vet about, especially if he has kennel cough and he is not eating. I would not recommend a puppy food for a 2 year old adult dog, the protien level is probably on the high side for him. Beside contacting your vet for help I would also recommend that you consider trying a kibble that may be palatable for him.

Good Premium Adult Dog Foods:

Wellness
Innova
Canidae
Natural Balance
Chicken Soup for Dog Soul
Nutro
Natures Recipe
Eukanuba

All of these brands offer canned food as well as kibble, I would recommend mostly kibble with some can food mixed in. Good Luck and please be sure to call your vet with regard to his appetite, cough and weight issues.

So sorry to hear about your poor puppy! Please take Lucky to the vet and get him checked out. Who knows what kinds of diseases he could be carrying in addition to kennel cough. Also, don't forget that many canine diseases can be spread between dogs and Max might need some extra care or vaccinations due to Lucky's illness(s).

It might take some time for him to show the weight that he puts on so remember that he may be gaining but not showing it yet.

Hope everything works out for you.

Definitely needs to get to the vet. If its kennel cough it can be very dangerous and he needs meds. As for not eating dry mixing wet food with dry food or puting very small pieces of meat mixed in. Sorry to hear about your doggie good luck!

It could be that his throat is really sore. Try some wet food for a day or so until his cough is better.
