but they did not think he was god, or even the son of god, or maybe even doubted that he existed, but think if he did then he was 'just' a wise & enlightened man (like buddha)... would that person still go to hell?

i mean not really 'following' him, but happening to live your life in that same way because that is what you choose. more like admiring him, like admiring buddha, ghandi, any other enlightened person, and living in the same manner.

It makes no sense to me that (if there even was a hell) God would condemn someone to hell for living as Jesus lived. Wouldn't emulating his lessons be the most sincere belief in what he taught?

No---Christ said the only way to God is to obey--when was the last time you met a Christian who obeyed Jesus by ceasing to judge or condemn others--& had unconditional love for everyone??--just as Buddha was a guru for the Hindus--so Jesus was a guru for the Jews--& both taught the very same teachings--that is to abrogate the ego & realize that we are not separate.

Oh you betcha.

I'm actually answering because it occurred to me that, if Jesus did exist, son of god or not, just being a good guy is no reason to follow him.

I think we should all follow our own paths and come to our own conclusions. A life modelled on someone else's is just a big fat waste.

No one can come to the father but through the son...You must except Jesus as Gods son..Thats part of the contract. You cant serve two masters...Faith------Not seeing but believing with your whole heart...No doubt what so ever....

Good question, I don't know. Some say that "Accepting Jesus as youe savior" means accepting his teachings and way of life.

To get to Heaven, one must accept Jesus as saviour. One day every knee will bow and tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord.
So I't say yes to your question.
