First off...NO I'M NOT RELIGOUS! Don't preach to me...
My sister-n-law and I were talking about marriage and such and the topic of marriages ending came up some how. Anywyas, she said that "you have to believe in god to make a marriage work and it will"
So I asked,"so if you got a divorce, that means you or your husband quit believing in god?"
She said, "oh...no." I don't understand! Is she crazy? (she's religous)

First of all, Yes it makes sense.

It doesnt make sense to you, but I will try to explain what your sister in law was trying to say.

A marriage that has God as the head of the marriage is one in which both man and woman put God before their partner. Next in line is the partner, the woman puts the man and his needs ahead of her own and the man must also put the woman and her needs ahead of his own. Now if both are doing this God ordained function of marriage, it will work wonderfully.

Alas, even Christians are still flesh and blood, selfish and sinful, and many times only think of ourselves and what we want and how we want it.

As Christians, when we do this, we are to step back, see what we are doing, and take steps to correct our own behavior. Sometimes it is our own spouse who must gently and lovingly point this out to us.

So, yes divorce can and does happen, but only when we forget how our marriages are supposed to work according to Gods plan, not because we stopped believing in our creator.

I disagree with what your sister-in-law says about marriage and God. Because how do you explain religious people who divorce their spouses because they simply can't take it anymore? There are also plenty of secular married couples who do just fine. However, it would be hard if you were an atheist and your fiance Christian or Catholic, because you'd have to marry in a church and that might make you uncomfortable. Furthermore, different views between the couple might get in the way and cause friction in the marriage. If your sister-in-law is a strict Catholic, one who does not believe in divorce.. then she probably thinks that religious faith will make you strong enough to overcome whatever obstacle in the marriage.

The logic isn't accurate. You have to believe in God to make marriage work. Is that the only thing you have to do? No If a marriage ends in divorce it could be the result of a number of things, not believing in God might be one of them, it might not be.

Aw geez. Just tell your sister that she's wrong and that she can go shove it. You don't have to believe in God to have a successful marriage (though it is usually a good idea to share the same or similar religion). Also, if you get divorced, it normally doesn't have to do with whether you believe or not. It's just one of life's SNAFU's.

I believe many Christians get married to keep from burning in hell due to fornication. Once the lust wears off, they awaken to the real personality of the person they married and don't like what they see. The key to a good marriage is to know your partner and have sex if the relationship is committed to by both parties before marriage. I believe Paul was wrong in his teaching on sex.

70% of America is Christian.

50% of marriages end in divorce in this country.

Somehow, Im not seeing beleif in God as making marriages work... I cannot, however, testify as to the sanity of your sister. She sounds more delusional than crazy.

This doesn't work as one would think. We all have free will. And we should believe the same things. Faith in God helps, but there are qualifications.

This is ridiculous - there are a lot of happily married people who do not believe in god. 'God' is not what makes a marriage work - it's the two people who are involved.

Yes she's crazy. You don't need god to have a happy marriage. God does not control love and patience.
