If you ask the same question about Jesus, the sensible answer sounds somthing like this "well, if I saw him resurrect dead people, turn water into wine...sure, as long as its not a good magic trick".

The story of Muhammad and how the first Muslims came to believe is another issue entirely. Under Islamic teachings, there never was any other-worldly phenomena shown to the first Muslims to give them some clue that Muhammad wasnt simply making up his prophethood claim, as is so common among the mentally ill.

Considering this, would you have followed Muhammad based on nothing but his word? Dont be so hasty in saying "no way". If you lived in the region, you were constantly looking to see which tribe was the more powerful...betting wrong on that could quickly prove fatal.

Imagine being the average person...someone who hedges his bets. You hear Muhammad make his claims, and then see his military success...do you not ascribe them to "the divines favor"?

If I was a christian I would not (because of the anointing), but as an average Arab I might, since it would look better than the polytheist stuff my dad would have taught me.
---------------------

I don't think christianity had penetrated Arabia, except for a few here and there. Possibly the tribal lifestyle made christianity with its emphasis on love and peace laughable to the Arab desert tribesman mindset. There was endemic violence that was only dealt with when used to spread Islam. Islam was more congenial to the habitual violence of the Arab tribesman, no need to repent of the behaviour and get in trouble with tribal elders.

Compared with the crazy polytheism that was quite common there, Mohammeds ideas seemed a big improvement. He was probably an excellent politician. I think he was convinced that an angel of God had given him a revelation, so he had a strong sense of self-belief. You can see that if you read the Koran - he is very sure he is right and gets pretty angry when people oppose him.
(Its a damn good way of delaying the gospel - clever one Satan)

Even if you compare it to what was going on in different parts of the world Mohammad looks like a good bet at that time. The Asians were all deep in bloody wars. The Christians were slaughtering and burning each other. The Hindus were in a huge bloody power struggle. The Muslims just said accept one God and his legal system. No kings deciding your life on whims, instead just the rule of law in a court system.
Yeah, I would have signed up in a flash.
Remember that no other place had any form of rule of law at that time. Read how court cases were decided in Europe then. Decisions by combat, or by trial. Their idea of a trial was tying rocks to your feet and dropping you into the river. If you floated up God had decided your innocence, if you did not float you were guilty, either way the trial was over, no appeals. Of course, floaters could be accused of being witches because the water rejected them.

It would probably have depended on the way he pretended himself and lived his life, as well as the way his followers did also. If someone is suffering from a mental illness it becomes apparent very easily after spending a little time with them as they are erratic and often change what they say and what they are doing.

If Muhammad was living his life in a way that agreed with his teachings and I agreed with those teachings then the answer would probably be yes.

I dream to travel in time to see Muhammad's era just to see if the contradicting stories told about him were true or not. Some stories portrait him as the best person in the entire history, while other stories portrair him as killer, sinner, theif...etc.

I would really love to go there and see the truth for myself, but I would not dream to stay there either way.

A conveyor of ideals is worth listening to. Amoral fabric is presented and, depending on its principles, suitable for adornment.
Muhammad, as a prophet, was a messenger from God. Therefore, Muhammad, like the pope, is an appropriate conveyor of God' message.

God always gives people miracles from the kind of things they are clever at,arabs at that time were fond of poetry, the most honored men were poets, and they were the cleverest at this domain,so God gave them the Quran, like nothing they have ever heard of,and challenged them to try and write something like it.and Quran wasn't the only miracle it is just the greatest, but Muhammad (pbuh) did other miracles.

017.088 Say: "If the whole of mankind and Jinns were to gather together to produce the like of this Qur'an, they could not produce the like thereof, even if they backed up each other with help and support. (QURAN)

IT IS TRUE THAT HE DID NOT HAVE MIRACLES LIKE JESUS BUT HE DID CLAIM TO BE A PROPHET BUT NOT JUST BY WHAT HE SAID AND NO HE WAS NOT MENTALLY ILL- WHO COMES UP WITH THIS STUFF???
FOR THOSE WHO DONT KNOW HE WAS AN ILLITERATE PERSON WHO COULD NOT READ OR RIGHT AND WAS KNOWN IN HIS TIME AS A VERY TRUTHFUL AND HONEST PERSON SO WHEN HE DID PREACH ABOUT THE ANGEL AND GOD PEOPLE DID BELEVIE HIM BECAUSE HE WAS TRUTHFUL AND HONEST BUT I AM A MUSLIM NOW AND I BELEIVE I WOULD BE IN THAT TIME TOO
