It depends on what results you want.
If you want to gain muscle, you should do fewer repititions with a higher weight- (you can put weight on your back)
example. 8 repitions per set, 3 sets.
If you want to tone you can just use your body weight and do higher repititions.
example. 15 repititions per set, 3 sets.

also, some people think that pushups work your arms. and thats somewhat true, but really its a chest excersize.

This pain is caused by microscopic tears in the fibers of the connective tissues in your body--the ligaments that connect bones to other bones, and the tendons that connect muscles to bones.

This microtrauma may sound harmful but is in fact the natural response of your muscles when they experience work. This is the primary reason it is so important that you get enough rest between specific muscle workouts.

Each time you work out with weights, you cause this "damage"--these tiny tears in your muscles; they need ample resting time to rebuild and become even stronger, bigger, and more firm.

During a workout, repeated contractions cause lactic and other acids, as well as proteins and hormones, to build up in muscle tissue. This can cause pain even without injury. But if you experience a sharp, continuous pain, or pain accompanied by a burning sensation, stop lifting and get it checked.

When yopu work out your muslces what you are doing is tearing them. The muscle then rerpair themselves by growing more muscle tissue. That is how your muslces get bigger. If you rip them too much (work out too much I mean) then they won't have a chance to regrow and add muscle. This is basically defeating the purpose by making you weaker. If you only do this 2-3 times a week then it is ok because they have a chance to grow more tissue.
