While I am not familiar with the Ontario area, I will say that you can check by calling any of the local hospitals, and asking your question. In the USA we have Community Mental Health agencies for every region, that can be contacted with such questions. Our States also have 1 or more public hospitals to treat mental patients for longer periods of time, or in lieu of a prison sentence.

Mental hospitals do exist, as well as "psych wards" in a regular hospital or children's hospital.
Mental or Psych hospitals are usually a secured/locked facility. This is for the safety of the patient. Some people with difficulties are in danger of harming themselves or others, so the Staff/nurses keep watch of the patients. Sometimes video cameras are used to help in safety. Usually you will find one or two beds per room, with a private bath. There will be a wide hallway and at least one group-activity room. Patients are encouraged to get dressed in the morning and wear normal clothing. Some facilities also have a fenced outdoor area for patients. Sometimes, depending on the facility, patients are encouraged or expected to help with chores. In the children's hospitals patients attend "school classes" inside the facility.
During the day you can expect at least one group meeting where people sit in chairs in a circle and are encouraged to take turns speaking with the others. These meetings will be guided by Dr.s or Staff members. You can also expect to meet face to face with a Dr. or staff person each day, addressing the problems that brought you to the hospital.
Some people are in the hospital for the sole purpose of changing from one medication to a new one, to help assure their safety during this time.
Others have a fear or behavior that has become a problem in their life. Some may not understand who they are or where they are, and are outside of reality.
Yet, others have been suicidal, or violent, or have taken drugs or alcohol.

How long a person stays may be determined by things other than the person's condition. Some people are there on a "72-hour hold" for their own safety or by law enforcement. Others are there only as long as their insurance company will pay for, (maybe 3 days, or up to 10 days). Other people, depending on their need and ability to pay, are in for longer stays.

Do contact the front desk of your local hospital to find the answers to your questions. They can direct you.

There is the
Centre for Addiction & Mental Health
(416) 425-3930
175 Brentcliffe Rd, East York, ON

They have two different facilities in the Toronto area.

I was in a physiatrist hospital for a month when I was a teen ager. Most of the privately run places are actually pretty nice. You have a schedule you have to keep to. You get up at a certain time, have breakfast, have some time to study or do crafts, have lunch etc...

You also have sessions with a doctor as well as group sessions to work out the things that are bothering you. Some people think that group sessions are weird but they are not. Everyone I met, staff and patients, were excepting and loving people. None of us were perfect and we all had things to work through and guess what??? That was OK. So what if one girl had an anger issue and would beat the crap out of the water fountain...we loved her as she was and excepted her.

The hospital I was in even had field trips the stable patients could go on. They had classes you could take to further your education as well as out door activities.

For me being in the hospital was a blessing. I learned a lot about myself in that month and also made some friends. There are many days in my life when I wish I could go back and stay awhile in the hospital. Not because I am having problems but just because it was truly the only place I have ever been in my life where everyone was excepted for who they were. You could just been yourself, problems and all.

Most hospitals have a mental health unit. It's not that bad. You get up in the morning and have your blood pressure taken and temperature and then you go get your meds. Breakfast is ususally served next and you eat and then go lay down in your room or you can go to the activities that are scheduled. They have group therapy and art therapy and they have exercise and different activities. Your psychiatrist will come visit and talk with you. You have lunch and dinner and you can usually have visitors at some point in the day. They take away any sharp objects like razors and stuff. If you follow the rules you will be fine. Just stay away from the troublemakers.

Try not to go to one unless you really are off the edge so to say. They treat you like children half the people in there are nutcakes. They drug you up even when you don't need it. A Shrink will see you for five minutes. Not quite enough time to analyze you. They have little recreation times and color like my 5 yr, old granddaughter. When you go to check it out they make it sound great but they are only after your insurance if you have any, That was my experience and I left after 2 days.
