Go to your used dealers and see what they have and also check your local newspaper for used vehicles, but no matter where you go tell them that you want your mechanic to check it out and if you don't have one than ask your friends who they go to, they usually don't ask alot to check out a vehicle. Also when you find one you like go online to Kelley Blue Book or NADA and find out how much its worth. Good Luck

Caryn,
I'm going to highly advise you buy a certified used car. These are used cars from the dealer ie a used Toyota at a Toyota dealer. They will have gone through an inspection and have a new limited warranty attached. I feel that you are at a lower risk of buying somebody else's lemon this way since a reputable dealer wants you to come back again and buy your next one new. You may pay a bit more for this ($500 or so) but believe me its worth it - too many questionable used lots out there.
In addition for used cars if you want reliability and a general low-risk purchase, keep towards Japanese cars. Toyota and Hondas are so durable that as long as their oil has been changed regularily there is little risk of anything going wrong with them. Toyota's are usually cheaper to insure since they are not considered cool with the 20 somethings that crash cars!
Lastly, no matter where you buy,.make any purchase conditional on an independant inspection. This wil cost you $50. If they refuse, stay away from that car as they're hiding something! Also, for an independant inspection, go to a garage which is geographically removed from the dealer to ensure true independance.
Cars are build so well now and really from 1990 onwards, that the used fleet is very good today. Also leasing has become so popular and people look after used cars better since they are inspected when turned in and damages charged.
One final caution - NEVER buy a used car with 15,000 to 20,000kms on it as this is when rental cars are sold off and you don't wnat a car which has been abused like an average rental. I know myself I've done plenty of doughnuts in rentals I've had! If you're in the States, that's approx 10-14,000 miles.
The great thing about used is that somebody has taken the biggest depreciation hit and most cars are problem free for 7-8 years so you get to drive a better car than you would ever dish out for new. I bought a second hand Corolla certified and drove it for another 12 years - in fact I still have it!!! I recently purchased a used 2004 BMW and hope I'm so lucky with it.
Have fun car shopping!
Hope this helps

Before you buy, get the 2007 Consumer Guide to Used Cars and Kellys Used Car Prices Blue Book. These guides will give you good info on used cars, pricing and what to look for when checking out potential cars.
Then buy your local Auto Trader magazine (about $1.25-$1.50, usually published once a month). You will find good deals in your area using that.
